Don’t miss the ancient ruins of Angkor Wat in Cambodia. As the royal seat of the wealthy and advanced Khmer Empire between the 9th and 13th Centuries, Angkor boasted two monumental temple complexes, the most famous of which is Angkor Wat. Based on religious concepts adapted from India, Angkor and its components were models of the universe. This serenely beautiful area was centered on the worship of the god-king who built it as his final resting place. Flourishing for almost five hundred years, Angkor was abandoned in the 15th Century and the temples became concealed by jungle. The 100 or so temples are the sacred remains of what was once a much larger administrative and religious center. In 1858, a French explorer named Henri Mouhot rediscovered Angkor and great care was undertaken to clear away the jungle vegetation that threatened to destroy the monuments. The temple restoration continues to this day.
